Honest Abe

"My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right." Abraham Lincoln

I took this photograph a few weeks ago, at a rest stop off I-80, on my way to visit my daughter and my grandchildren in Laramie. This monument to Abraham Lincoln is a well-known landmark that attracts many tourists as they travel through Wonderful Wyoming. Often, they merely pass through on their way to somewhere else, unaware of the magnificent beauty that they are missing. But there are those people who take the time to explore Wyoming's vast wilderness areas. They opt to identify with the frontier spirit of the great American West.

The Lincoln Monument is a tribute to Abraham Lincoln, sculpted by Robert Russin. It is a granite pedestal at the Summit Rest Area, East of Laramie, Wyoming. In 1959, Russin erected this sculpture nearby on Sherman Hill, above the old U.S. Highway 30 (Lincoln Highway). State officials moved the sculpture in 1969, after I-80 was built. Abraham Lincoln is remembered for being a great man who brought unity to our war-torn country during the Civil War. America is greatly divided now at this point in our nation's history. Abraham Lincoln's words of wisdom are just as meaningful now as they were in his famous speech of 1858: "A house divided cannot stand."
